FAIR'N GREEN certifies Belgium's first
winery
The internationalization of the sustainable viticulture system continues: Château Bon Baron de Dinant is the first Belgian winery to be certified according to the FAIR'N GREEN standard.
Global trends such as climate change and the growing interest in sustainable products are also influencing vineyards in Belgium. For this reason, Château Bon Baron researched different approaches to sustainable viticulture and opted for FAIR'N GREEN certification.
At Château Bon Baron, we believe that sustainability is essential for the future of our planet.
"We strive to create harmonious, authentic wines that reflect the unique characteristics of our terroir in a way that is green, respectful and fair to every living being.
By sharing our knowledge and experience with FAIR'N GREEN and its members, we are challenged to further minimize our CO2 emissions and environmental impact through manpower, old and new technologies and renewable energy sources."
A well-thought-out methodology
15 hectares of vines and 14 different historic grape varieties.
FAIR'N GREEN was launched in 2013 as a joint initiative between wineries, research institutes and other stakeholders. The system focuses on holistic sustainability (in business management, the environment and society).
It was designed from the outset for international applicability and distribution. With the certification of Château Bon Baron, Belgium is one of the countries where the FAIR'N GREEN system has now been successfully implemented, along with France, Spain and Israel, for example.
The transfer of FAIR'N GREEN to a winery in Belgium showed that the system can be successfully applied in all European wine-growing regions. Other issues, such as the protection of local species and biodiversity projects in the Meuse Valley as comprehensive sustainability measures, were also intensively discussed.
FAIR'N GREEN has now successfully certified over 130 wineries in ten countries. In future, the organization hopes to convince other wineries in Belgium and other European wine-growing regions to join the certification scheme. FAIR'N GREEN is interested not only in awarding the certificate according to strict criteria, but also in the dynamic, international development of certified wineries towards a sustainable future.
The Château Bon Baron winery has grown steadily to become one of Belgium's leading wineries since 2000.
